Artist Statement

My art is an exploration of visibility and presence, a reflection of my journey from blending in to asserting my place unapologetically. Growing up in Mumbai, I was shaped by cultural expectations that valued modesty and quiet over self-expression. Over time, art became a way to unlearn those limitations—to step beyond the margins and claim space, physically and conceptually. Now based in Ottawa, my work as a sculptor exists in dialogue between past and present, between South Asian influences and a contemporary global identity.

Working with wood and plaster—materials that challenge, resist, and guide me—I approach my process with surrender. I begin with intention but allow the material’s innate character to shape the outcome. Knots, cracks, and grain patterns in wood, along with the fluid unpredictability of plaster, become integral to the work, embodying resilience, transformation, and presence. I honor the histories embedded within reclaimed wood and the raw tactility of plaster, treating each piece as a collaboration rather than a construction.

At its core, my work is about creating space—both physically and symbolically. Moving beyond static forms, I explore how sculpture can shape movement, alter perception, and transform the way people experience their surroundings. My pieces do not simply exist in space; they intervene, disrupt, and invite engagement. Whether through free-standing forms that define pathways or sculptural elements that enclose, expand, or fragment a space, my work is an invitation to move through, to feel, to be aware of one’s own presence within it.
